Slider,

Oddly enough, I used the very same "Torches and Pitchforks" image today when BS'ing about the state of things to come with Bailout Mania reaches its natural climax. When the peasants figure it out they'll be coming to kill both the Monster and the Doctor, I think.

Best Buy packed, supermarket slow. People picking up a grocery sack of free food from the mission while yakking on their cell phone.

Frugality is something our parents and grandparents learned the Hard Way, but the Hard Way has not set in yet. The modern household budget is strewn with services we take for granted that weren't there 30 years ago: Cable, Cell, Internet, satellite, etc. A whole generation has never had to do without these things, and never has had to choose between this and basic food stuffs for the month.

It will take a while for these adjustments to take hold and things to re-order. Expect some really jarring images in the coming months - well appointed people doing things that are bizarrely inappropriate in the context they appear to represent, or the seeming dregs of society intruding on your daily routine in an otherwise normal scene. I remember as a kid sacking groceries in the recession of the 70's seeing women in fur and driving Cadillacs paying for their groceries with food stamps.

I bet it gets quite a bit worse this winter.
