I am not worried about the decrease in electricity consumption. Most of the decreases are probably due to one-time efficiencies. They are unlikely to be repeated. You may turn your thermostat down a few degrees, but next year you won't turn it down that much more. Once you buy the CFL bulbs there is not much more to be saved on lighting until LEDs become practical.

It is the same with gasoline, people cut out unnecessary trips and do some carpooling, but there is just so much that most of us can cut out without major lifestyle changes. At least 50% of the gas for my car is used going to the golf club and delivering meals on wheels. I have no intention of cutting out either activity. I get nearly 25 mpg average, so buying a hybrid is not in my immediate future either.

Agreed, some people wasted gas and electricity and they will cut way back when they lose their job and/or their home. But, most of us will have non-recurring decreases in our energy consumption in the coming years.

Having said all that, it is encouraging that people are in fact conserving energy.

Best to all,

JRH
