Why argue over something over with a decade now?

Indeed, no point in arguing. But leaving such things unexamined has consequences. It is the tabu on getting into nitty gritty about Kosovo that contributed to its eventual independence earlier this year. This, in turn, violated the agreement of keeping national borders in Europe intact after WWII. And it didn't take long for Russians to say what is good for the goose is good for the gander - and recognize independence of Abkhasia and S. Ossetia. An automatic off-the-hip argument would be that the Russians would have done it anyway. Maybe. But the way things stand today, there is a clear precedent in their favor - which we set up and they followed. In time, they will not be the last to do so.
