Gates will manage the withdrawl of american forces from iraq. Unlike vietnam, we can actually say we won this war, albeit not as planned and not with grand results and with a definite shiaa/iran problem not fully resolved. Not to mention the kurds....But we can take what we can get. Iraq will not be al quaeda home and perhaps good shiaa can beat bad shaa (al sadr) and we can get a C+. We also need grownups vis a vis our policy with Afganistan. I think that will be a much harder place for us to get a C grade. I think Gates can help with this potential quag too. Remember obama just kicking the can down the road for a year with gates. DOD will be a big appointment in 2010. Obama will put gates on a new path and i think gates voted for obama. (guess)
