LIGHTING REVOLUTION: Anchorage installing 16,000 LED streetlights



Folks,

This appears to be the first large scale installation of LED streetlights in the USA, and it's happening right now a few blocks from me. Back in February the City of Anchorage conducted a pilot study of both LED and induction street lights. I was mesmerized by the LED lights, and went over to see them a dozen times. IMO, they are fantastic!

The city chose the LED lights, and recently began installing the first batch in my end of town. Yesterday I talked to a crew working a long street near my house and got an up close look at the lights. The were replacing high pressure sodium (HPS) light fixtures and bulbs with new fixtures that contain banks of LEDs. The LEDs save about 50% on electricity, and provide huge savings on maintenance costs because they last so much longer. (Note: A further possible energy savings may result from shutting off lights on back streets during the early morning hours.)

Last night I walked over to see the results of the crew's work. These are "cut out" lights, so they spill very little light to the side or to the sky. When you look down a long street you can barely see the LED lights in the distance, but you can see the old HPS lights from miles away. The effect is illustrated quite well by the second picture in the PDF below.
