Tell that to Bela Lugosi! Your mention of Frankenstein stirred by interest and it appears that Lugosi was originally offered the role, but turned it down. This decision gave Boris Karloff his big break in Hollywood.

If my memory of literature history serves me right, Mary Shelley, with her husband and other British writers were sitting around the hearth one night and the decision was made to see who could come up with the concept for the scariest story and write the actual story.
