OK, but I don't see that being tied to the auto bailout. Even if Washington all of a sudden decided that bailing out failed corporations didn't make sense, they would still move forward with tougher CAFE standards.

What I do see, however, is a bunch of politicians and analysts saying, "coulda, shoulda, woulda," as if to pretend that Washington knows how to design and market cars better than Detroit. Or Japan and Germany for that matter. So they tie all of their "conditions" to a bailout, cause you know, the free market can't be trusted to decide what's best for the auto industry.

Only problem is that none of the politicians ever allowed the free market to do its thing, including weed out the companies that just don't deserve to survive.

"Too big to fail" ...
