And the unions have made plenty of concessions already; as we saw in the Herbert piece that was posted earlier, the wages for new employees have been cut significantly. A lot of these concessions just won't show up on the bottom line for a few years because of the nice benefit packages the retired workers have.

Benefits for retired workers have to be completely off the table; people who gave their entire lives to the company with the promise that they'd be kept secure in their old age should not have to suddenly find themselves losing their homes and having to go out and get a job at 75. No way. No one over 55 should lose a thing. But that's what conservatives want to put on the table. I'd rather have my taxes go towards their pensions than see them go up in smoke.
