I am not concerned about the risk, and I certainly have no problem with having the federal government subsidize technology research. I just think that there is potentially a “bigger bang-for-the-buck” in allocating increasingly scarce governmental resources to companies that have more of a mass market potential.

I am personally delighted that Sergey Brin, Larry Page, Jeff Skoll and Elon Musk can drive a high-end sports car like the Tesla. Do I want to subsidize their opportunity? No. I would rather subsidize the technology for a hybrid driven by guys like minemeld.
