Bingo, as expected: <University type, hanger-on, quasi-prof, was full prof but quit, artsy-fartsy, had grants for one thing and another ... also does fine carpentry and joinery, helps others build and fix up houses, very giving person really, lives like monk drinks like fish smokes like chimney, so some redeeming features>

Note that the drinking and smoking are not markers of humanity but self-abnegation = a form of mild suicide in the face of a world which won't make gentle rational sense in his ideological beliefs. A form of "Oh, to Hell with it. I'll sink myself for a while and shut out that outside world in approved self-indulgence."

I think monks don't get wasted on booze and smokes.

It might be that rumours of the death of US$ are premature and in fact recovery will be in US$, not metals, minerals and oil. Oil is still expensive compared with alternative energy, insulation, small cars, moving to warmth etc.
