I think what is going on here, Lane, is that "calories are sometimes not calories." They are not all interchangable. We absorb or don't absorb some foods in different ways.

The initial assumption by the Cardios was that fat was dense and would make us fat. But it turns out fat satisfies our hunger and makes us eat less. While carbs make us hungrier. Nuts are an excellent way to cut hunger pains between meals. It turns out that we can eat them as we please, as long as they are raw.

There is so much that we don't know yet about diet.
