You have to understand this.
As a youngster I always wanted to move North. Way North. I used to go outside and watch the northern lights at night, time and time again.
Shortly after getting out of college I tried to come up here, with a major oil. They all just referred me to the L48. They wanted experience, which I did not have.
Never made it, thought it was over.
Came up for my L48 co I worked for (to Kenai) around '82. Bout peed my pants before I got off the airplane in Anchorage. Was an unbelievable trip. Made one or two more.
AK was a lot different in '82 than it is now, for sure.
But never made it permanently.
Finally made it to Norway, for several years. Loved it.
Might throw in here that just before I moved to Norway I saw the Northern Lights in Morgan City, LA no less. Very unusual, but I was there when it happened. More thinking and dreaming of The North.
After Norway had to move back to the US of A. Did not really want to but had to. Decided to forego Houston area, quit my major, and took a job in AK. Came up for the interview in mid '98.
After interview went back to my home, which I had retained, in L48. Had a nice evening meal with family, went up and settled in my office. Turned on the radio and guess what was playing?
"North to Alaska" by Johnny Horton. Been literally ages since I had heard that song. Knew then w/o doubt I was going to make it. I did make it and I am even further north than I originally thought I would be. Destiny I guess. Yes.
My nice and loving wife then bot me JH's CD of greatest hits, and I play it now and then. Some decent music none the less. JH was one of the gang during the transformation to rock and roll.
But in general of late been listening to a lot of old Pink Floyd. 'Mother will they break my balls' type stuff. Some Tom Petty too. But I really really like Pink Floyd. Some great lyrics. They really did a lot of good stuff.
We all have lots of little (or bigger) stories to tell, about how we arrived where we are today. This is a little one of mine.

In edit. Now that I am here I hope for an early retirement, so I can travel, fish and shoot (photos) much much more of this great land. I would also love to get a dog team, but I am getting a bit long in the tooth for that me thinks. Maybe it will yet happen though, my wife is pretty loving! Any of you have about 10 yapping and pooping dogs in the back yard? If you do and have a wife, she must be good to you too! |
