Gary:

The NY Times Oct 10, 1997 page D1 article stated that the MONTGOMERY national survey only included 750 mutual fund investors who anticipated average annual returns of 34% over the next decade - 3 times the average annual return from stocks over the last 60 years. With such a small sample, I wonder how their sample was chosen (statistically or at random) and what the margin of error in their sampling method was). However, I don't doubt it indicates increasing over-optimism on the part of some mutual fund investors..

What worries me more is the possibility of some unanticpated event (e.g. a huge Asian bank failure) impacting the U.S. stock market as a result of the Asian currencies and stock markets debacle that seems to be snowballing with each passing day. Hong Kong is dropping like an elevator with a cut cable. Am I crazy to be concerned about this ?
