I listened to the conference call this afternoon and it was pretty upbeat. Mr.Frankel said that they had the best quarter of HP sales yet and they were thrilled w/ the new Glaxo agreement on herpes. He also was quite happy with the total sales for the first six months of a bit over $20 million, noting that the first 2 quarters are historically the slowest for Qdel. It seemed clear to me that he anticipates things getting substantially better in the last half of the year, especially in the waived strep a market- also he was quite pleased w/ the 48% increase in domestic professional sales. In response to a question from Jeff Holmes @ Cleary Gull, he said a lot of the big players in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics are merging and consolidating and they have some products and divisions that produce substantial revenues, but not quite big enough for the big boys to fool with-he said such products were perfect for a co like Qdel to exploit and acknowledged that they were working on doing something about it if possible. Time will tell but I think we may see an acquisition or some such development in the near future - just speculation on my part.
