That's true in my case, but it's only because the resources required to develop a new car are so massive. Even with 400m, if Tesla is really going to develop an entirely new sedan from scratch, that is just a downpayment. I don't have any particular ax to grind, it's just that I don't see how these guys make it without huge money unless one of the majors buys their tech or them outright. If you look at the current boutique manufacturers out there, none of them were able to make it without being taken over by a major (Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc). That crazy Veyron is only out there because the VW chairman was interested in a 'science project', and they sell that thing for over 1.5M.

PS - Even some established manufacturers may not be able to keep up in terms of future product development because they don't have the sales base to fund it. I'm thinking specifically of Saab and Volvo when GM and Ford cut them loose...
