Good reason? Try power, pride, legacy. Least of all for the benefit if the nation. That said Mr Harper has only himself to blame. Voters put him on a short leash with the minority expecting him to try and reach consensus with the opposition and not overstep too far to the right. Instead he attempted to chew through the leash. Next step looks like the dog gets neutered. What a farce.
