I wonder how much it took to develop the Tesla Roadster? That was a truly "from scratch" vehicle. The follow-on, 4-door sedan that Tesla plans would not be from scratch. They've already nailed the propulsion and energy storage systems. So they just have to create a new car chassis and retrofit the propulsion and energy storage systems. That's a simpler task than starting from scratch with the Tesla, thus should cost less money to build. However, I suspect they will have to invest some good cash into finding ways to bring costs down, as well as to invest in manufacturing facilities that can build cars at a faster pace to meet the increased volume they anticipate with a $50K EV sedan that will compete with BMW and Mercedez, and Lexus sedans.
