I got a kidney stone from being on Atkins about 8 years ago. My urologist was shocked that someone of my age--early 60's--would have his first stone. A few years later, U. Of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas published in a newsletter a preliminary study with a small N that indicated that Atkins reduced a natural chemical in the body that blocked stones. I never saw a follow up of it. The South Beach Diet starts with a modified Atkins like 3 wk phase and then adds more complex carbs and fruits very gradually and stays away from sugar. They do not say to avoid wheat though. Lots of folks lose weight on it, including me, and lose their cravings for sugar without eliminating wheat. Does Dr. Davis have any experimental data about wheat or is it anecdotal from his own practice?
