The big 3 are in the unenviable position of having manufactured cars, and stimulated the US economy, for many generations. Millions and millions of middle class jobs for families and educations for kids, and a decent retirement for the employees.

Yes, and it's a good one.

When labor is too expensive (i.e., labor is overpaid for the skills they possess due to the extortion of the labor unions), employees are not motivated to upgrade their skills. Year after year, dads in Detroit say, "Hey, why don't you go apply at the plant? It is a good living, by the time you're 50 you can retire and have 20 years of relative wealth."

And what's wrong with that?
