Is it cheaper to rent vs. own?

There is no other ratio that makes sense to prospective buyer. The only reason to violate the above is a hope that RE will start going up in value again. W/o a growing job market that just won't happen.

In a nutshell, there are just too many empty hoses just sitting there in this country.
