That $800B was in the last 5 years, not the last several decades. Since 2003, we've imported 14.5 billion barrels of oil from the Persian Gulf and OPEC countries. At an average price of $70 per barrel, that comes to $1 trillion. So the costs to safeguard our supplies of oil in the region would effectively double the price of oil, and consequently gasoline, if the true costs were reflected in the end price.

Of course, I'm sure you will summarily dismiss that, because you don't like to believe our government is manipulated by the rich and powerful to enrich themselves further. Understandable, but a hopelessly naive view on reality.
