It only will if we let it.
One fantastic way to get things going again would be to put together a huge govt rebate campaign. Where by home owners will get huge rebates and loans for things such as putting in Heat pumps or geothermal systems, or for buying a new electric car or hybrid. Or for putting in a solar or wind system.
Towns and cities will get the same support for putting in infrastructure for the new electric vehicle or <EV> and for all sorts of other new alternate energy projects.
There is a mountain of things that are proven and on the drawing board but have not yet moved forward because of an unwillingness to do so.
I don't believe that a lot of inflation would occur if they printed money only to be used for these purposes.
It would be fantastic for the world and for the economy.
And don't worry the Oil companies will be just fine supply oil to a great number of vehicles that still require petrol including most trucks, planes, heavy equipment etc etc. Not to mention all the other things on this planet we need Oil for.

Stimulate the large geothermal projects into production, and the solar thermal and the wind projects. The electric car creators, The fuel cells people.
Also repair and re designate our roads to properly handle a new small narrow electric vehicle.
Instruct the big three to retool for the electric car revolution.
Pay cities to put power loading systems<plugs> through out the cities.
JUST DO IT.
There would be tons of jobs started very fast that would also stimulate all sorts of new developments all along the way.
Using new money guarantees it will work.
The world is running out of easy oil.
We are going to have to do this no matter what. SO lets get on with it.
