For as much as Bernanke is supposed to be a scholar on the Depression, it's hard to believe that he's not already proposed that the government become the direct lender instead of funneling money thru the banks. Not just for mortgages, but for businesses as well. That's what finally cured the Depression (along with a war). Maybe he has and is just being railroaded by Paulson to help out his buds first.
