So subsidies are okay for Mercedes but not okay for an American company. Why?

it is for any company. If a company is considering investing substantial amount in a state, state can give some incentives to do so, to lower their cost of investment. These incentives are in forms of free land, infrastructure, tax rebates, or possibly even outright cash grants. That's how things are done.

You did not answer my question. You claimed it was perfectly normal for Alabama to subsidized the operation of foreign auto plants in Alabama but you think its unacceptable for the federal gov't to help American auto companies. There is a double standard in play here. Do your work for a foreign gov't or company?
