12/5/08 update
I'll begin with the big news. With just two weeks to go in the Contest, ROBERT's portfolio has scooted past GENE's portfolio and taken the lead! GENE's portfolio has been in first place since mid-May, but when Friday's closing bell rang ROBERT's portfolio was up 4.5% YTD with GENE's portfolio showing a 2.2% YTD gain.
As for the broad market, although stocks initially dropped in response to this morning's horrible jobs report, they surprisingly managed to reverse direction and closed with a nice gain. The gain was good enough to bring both the Nasdaq Composite Index and the Nasdaq Biotech Index to pretty much even for the week. At Friday's close, the Nasdaq Composite Index was down -43.09% YTD (vs. -42.10% YTD a week ago), while the Nasdaq Biotech Index was down -18.47% YTD (vs. down -19.29% YTD a week ago). The Contest portfolio median also closed the week about even, at down -40.18% YTD (vs. down -38.74% YTD a week ago).
By week's end, there were still only two contest portfolios in the black YTD and 5 of the 33 beating the NBI. Unless there are objections, I'll set the contest end date on Friday, 12/19.
Enjoy the weekend everyone!
