There were some high ends clothes made in New York City well into 1980s and early 90s. The union enforcer would visit every shop, making sure there were no non-union workers working there. They are all gone now. a whole section of midtown Manhattan used to be called the Garment District. If union remains in place, 20 years we will be saying to our kids: "Detroit used to be called Motor City back when they still made cars here."

Yes I know. My dad worked there for Brooks Brothers for many years. They paid him crap...he'd take the Lexington line at 7 in the morning and didn't come home until 7 at night exhausted. This is not an industry you could have saved...the unions had nothing to do with its demise.


But you see, Al, the unions organized the workers and that was too much like communism and that scared the owners. That's why they left. I bet your dad never knew that. Its too bad Joe or I weren't around to tell him. ;-)
