Each individual scientist may suspect something or nothing or whatever... Darwin himself didn't elaborate that much, the "blind watchmaker" described no mechanism or anything, just an admission that "selection" can seemingly override much evolution in the blink of an eye. The whole "random mutation" came later and certainly never precluded 'god'. In fact 'neo Lamarckians' have been around all along: ""demonstrating how organisms can subtly direct aspects of their own evolution"" This whole thing is huge IMHO.. we'll here alot more about it soon.
