For example, Toyota has determined that it can reduce cost while improving quality by having some of its parts manufacturers locate on site alongside their plants. Seems like a good idea. One problem: Gm can't do this, because the UAW contract prohibits using non-union workers on the same site. Utterly stupid. TPS (Toyota Production System) is the reason that Toyota can produce more vehicles with less man-hours than a GM plant. Why doesn't GM just implement something like it? They couldn't if they wanted to -- the UAW contract would not permit it. Agreeably, there are other factors. But none of them matters until the absurd UAW contracts are done away with and GM and the others can hire and fire at will and pay reasonable compensation to assembly line workers.
