There are whole economics textbooks devoted to division of labor and trade balances. I don't wish to summarize them here, nor am I able to at this point. However, I do remember some of the conclusions I drew when I read them.

I don't know what our 'fundamental' problem is. If I had to guess I would probably put it somewhere around a belief that there IS a free lunch, or that everybody else is doing it so I better do it too (or else go out of business). But I'm just guessing.

It's also possible that "everything is exactly the way it's supposed to be, all of the time". I've gotten a lot of mileage out of that one.
