It sounds like your folks only ran the rental boat business for one summer. I recently visited an old restored resort that has been turned into our state's newest park on one of the islands in the Puget Sound. The Wooden Boat Center out of Seattle has a shop and museum there, and have restored a couple of the original boats that were rented out to visitors to the resort in the summer.

My hubby's first job was maintaining rental boats at Frank's Boats in Atlantic Highland NJ. He got the job when he was 15, and had to be there by 4:30 am to get them all gassed up and ready for rent. He held that job every summer until he went away to college. Some of the fondest memories of his youth are of working there.

I looked up Shadow Mountain Lake............looks like someone is renting kayaks.
