Battery development has produced some very good batteries the last 15 years. Before that we were stuck with only two choices for a car or portable devices. Lead acid and NiCads. The demand for higher performance devices pushed massive development of newer, higher capacity small form batteries. Now that electric cars are going to finally take off you will see battery development shift to the form factor that will compliment that area. It didn't exist 20 years ago.
