A form of lead acid is till viable. Lead cobalt perhaps. Lead is cheap at least compared to nickle and lithium. I suspect that a battery with lots of lead would do better as to cost, though it may weigh more and capacity may be somewhat less. Its kinda like when we thought turbine engines were the answer, but high costs kept the piston engine around. If they can improve capacity from a lead or hybrid lead battery it would go a long way to keep costs down. If they can do that and make them last ten years with high discharge rates then maybe the battery EV has a chance. Still have the problems with slow charge rates though.
