Mass. students score well on worldwide tests

By Associated Press | Tuesday, December 9, 2008 |

BOSTON — Fourth and eighth graders from Massachusetts have outscored the nation and most of their international peers in the world’s largest study of student performance in math and science.

The 4th-grade students ranked second worldwide in science achievement and tied for third in mathematics in the 2007 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study.

The state’s 8th graders tied for first in science and ranked sixth in mathematics.

The test is administered every four years. The results came from tests administered in April and May 2007 to 3,600 students attending 95 randomly selected schools in the state.

In all, 59 countries and 425,000 students participated.

Massachusetts and Minnesota were the only states that opted to compare their results with other nations.
