They're in a tough spot, and I think they're apt to mostly die before it is over. The possible exceptions are those that have something really special to offer -- for example, WSJ.

Amazon is well-positioned to step in if they choose to do so. The Kindle (which I have and would not be without having used it for a while) is to publishing what iTunes is to music. The book publishers will soon start to feel it, and the newspaper publishers will, too. I don't like the way Kindle handles newspaper subscriptions, but over time it will get better and as it does there is nothing to prevent Bezos from becoming the biggest provider of printed news in the country.


It will be interesting to see how it all develops.
