I meant "cost in lives" not cost in cash. Everybody knew what the Russians went through in Afghanistan and they didn't want our guys getting into what could have become a long term battle against the Taliban. It was easier to just hand bundles of cash to the Northern Alliance guys and let them do the nitty gritty while we just blew the heck out of everybody with our Air Force. One of the problems with that was that by letting the Warlords run the show, we'd eventually be stuck with them controlling most of the country, which they still do outside Kabul. It doesn't take a genius to figure out why the poppy crops have been coming in at record levels since we through the Taliban out.
