Some other factors : In Silicon Valley, many of the patrons of PEP boys are recent immigrant workers. Many of these people have gone to other places. Also, the past few years, with a moderate amount of money, you could buy a pretty good used car. The third factor - most of things that go wrong with modern cars need a diagnostic computer and special tools to fix. I could work on a slant six with a small number of simple tools. What am I going to do with a Prius ? Tweak the source code ? The best I can do would be to take it to a dealer, they look at the trouble codes, and then swap out modules.
