Douglas Adams an environmentalist and me makes two. I have been one since I was three and learned that lead paint is poisonous and so is a lot more and that little children can cut their feet on corrugated iron and other rubbish left lying around. Note that "mentalist" is the second half of the word which means thinking, not spiritual belief in any nonsense some ignorant hypocritical soothsayer like Al Gore might spout for self-aggrandizement and peuniasry gain like some common mysticism spouting priesthood. Note that Adams emphasized knowledge rather than belief.

Garden variety populist "Environmentalists" get obsessed with their known knowns, are unaware of the unknown unknowns and trivialize the the known unknowns such as the opportunity cost of their ideology. They are operating on a spiritual level rather in a rational way. A good test of irrational belief is worrying about supermarket bags which are about the most useful and benign and low cost things around. One can never have too many of them. Actual environmentalists don't care at all about supermarket bags. Which is not to say that anybody who doesn't care about supermarket bags is an environmentalist.
