New poll shows we still love Obama

Barack Obama's honeymoon continues.

He's doing such a great job handling his transition to the presidency that 79 percent of Americans approve of the job he's done so far.

I knew things were going well for Obama when CNN carried a headline Tuesday that read simply: "Obama speaks; Dow rises more the 300 points."

On Wednesday the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey showed that only 18 percent of Americans disapprove of Obama's actions so far.

By contrast, George Bush's rating was 65 percent at a similar point eight years ago when he was president-elect. Bill Clinton's rating was even lower, at 62 percent, before he took office in 1993.

Americans obviously over time have shown they like to be optimistic that they selected the right person to be president -- even before he gets to the White House.

But Obama has set a higher bar for the next president-elect to follow.
