This is a change from their plans for using the 2.3GHz licensed
spectrum as outlined at the last shareholders meeting. Maybe the
engineers have figured out how to get practical use of that spectrum
from Ricochet modem to pole-top radio. If they have, that could
be good.

A few moths ago they were talking about augmenting the pole-top to
WAP links with licensed spectrum. Currently, of course, that traffic
all goes on the unlicensed 902-928 MHz airwaves. I'd be quite
happy for Metricom to continue with that strategy.

If they use the new spectrum only from pole-top onward, they can
install at will, leaving customer modems untouched. The logistics
are simpler, and they still improve service. With the competition
for mobile surfing being CDPD over the voice cellular network, an
expensive choice, there's got to be a market for medium speed,
medium priced mobile Web, telnet, and e-mail acess.

Are they going for 2.3GHz in the mobile modems? Hmmmm.
