They had every reason. Many in the NA were the same people who caused the chaos that the Soviets invaded to solve. And they were part of the reason why the Taliban came to power.

The NA had behaved in a manner that reflected total commitment to what the US was doing. The CIA were comfortable with the relationship. Only after they balked at the last minute did anyone realize they were going to be a problem.

I don't think it is very well-informed to suggest that the NA was either the reason for the Soviet invasion or for the Taliban having come to power. The evolution of these situations were far more complex than you suggest.
