Clearnet Announces Strong Third Quarter Subscriber Results

TORONTO, Ontario, October 6th, 1997 -Clearnet Communications Inc. ("Clearnet") today announced that net Mike subscriber additions were 11,175 in the third quarter ended September 30, 1997 bringing total Mike subscribers to 29,650. The third quarter net Mike subscriber additions represented (i) a 60% increase in the total number of Mike subscribers as compared to the 18,475 at June 30, 1997; (ii) an approximate 30% increase over the 8,631 net additions in the second quarter; and represented the largest quarterly number of net subscriber additions since launching the Mike network just over one year ago.

Analogue SMR net subscriber additions were approximately negative 1,800 in the third quarter ended September 30, 1997 reducing total analogue SMR subscribers to approximately 59,670 at September 30, 1997 as compared to 61,470 at June 30, 1997. Approximately 2,900 analogue SMR subscribers migrated to the Mike network in the third quarter. Excluding subscribers who migrated to Mike, the analogue SMR subscriber base would have increased by 1,100 subscribers.

Total Clearnet subscribers (including both analogue SMR and Mike) were 89,320 at September 30, 1997 representing an increase of 34,847 or 64% as compared to 54,473 one year earlier. The Company is launching commercial Clearnet PCS service in October 1997 and therefore there are no PCS subscribers to report.

The subscriber results disclosed in this release are subject to possible adjustment per Clearnet's normal period end review process. Clearnet expects to announce complete third quarter financial results per its normal release schedule on November 13, 1997.

Clearnet (TSE, ME: NET.A; NASDAQ: CLNTF) is a leading Canadian wireless communications company that operates three separate wireless networks: digital PCS nationally, the digital Mike network in Ontario and Qu‚bec, and analogue dispatch communication services across Canada.
