Welcome back. IBM has extended the lead in portable drives. What do they mean by "Magnetoresistive Extended head"? Also, they talk about an "Integrated Lead Suspension technology".
Here's the article of reference.
"From the October 20, 1997 Issue of Electronic News
IBM introduced its latest storage products for notebook computers, both thin PC hard drives, the 8.1-gigabyte Travelstar 8GS and the 3GB Travelstar 3GN. "They're the lightest-weight drives in the world in their form factor," said Bill Healy, GM of Mobile Storage Products at IBM's Storage Systems Division. "If you want to take your office with you, you can fit the equivalent of 70 CD-ROMs in (the 8.1GB drive)." IBM said that its Magnetoresistive Extended head technology, the company said, allows the drives to send a stronger signal out to the head, increasing the bits per square inch on the disk drive platter, and that its Integrated Lead Suspension technology provides room for more disk platters in a smaller place inside the disk drive. Travelstar 3GN, now shipping, is priced at $299, while the Travelstar 8GS, shipping in December, will be priced at $649. Dell Computer Corp., Gateway 2000 and Acer, Inc. are currently evaluating them for inclusion in their portable PCs. " |
