Powell is singling out Rush, as if he is speaking on behalf of conservatives everywhere.

Powell is pointing out that polarizing figures like Rush and Palin have become the symbols of the GOP in a world that tends towards progressivism and unity. I guess as a liberal I could say what the heck...if that's the way they want to play their politics, go ahead. Unfortunately to score any points these figureheads must go out there, stereotype and marginalize entire classes of people while adding nothing constructive to the public discourse nor policy. That may work well for their self interests, but does harm to the nation. I would expect you to understand that.
