** OT ** Continuing my story of the previous post..

Talking to the Italian grandfather from Milan, they were partisans during the second world war. Took to the hills and quite literally survived on pancakes made from acorn flour.

One guy we visited up in the hills above Massa (where the marble comes from) runs a bar they've nicknamed "La cinque stella" (the five stars). You quite literally walk though cow sh*t to get to a stone path up to the bar where he serves the most revolting crap. Great view of the valley below, though.

Turns out the guy is a multi-millionare. He had stolen the money the US were dropping in the war to support the partisans and bought up land afterwards. Owned half the mountain. His wife ran a restaurant attached to the bar, and used newspaper as placemats.

Oddly enough, business was pretty good at both places.

Won't find that in Rick Steeve's books.
