Its estimated that the auto industry with its suppliers employes nearly 4 million people. Eastman Kodak is to the auto industry what a gas station is to the Pentagon.
4 million to 60,000, isn't anything like a gas station to the Pentagon, if by the later you mean the military. If you just mean the building, its would not an unreasonable statement except for the fact that your comparing all the workers, and all the workers for the suppliers, dealers, unaffiliated mechanics, gas station attendants etc., with the number of people who worked for one company. A more reasonable comparison is the employees of just GM (266K) to just Eastman Kodak at its peak (60K). Its not like there where not other film companies, and also jobs in processing, retailing, taking photographs, etc. And its not like all or even most of those 4 million jobs are in danger from GM, or even all of the big three going under. People would still build, buy, drive, maintain, repair, build parts and supplies for, etc. cars in the US.
But lets say that Kodak was to GM as a gas station was to the Pentagon.
That's all the more reason not to bail out GM. A smaller bailout is less harmful than a larger one. |
