I don't think energy independence is progressive by the dictionary definition. Hunkering down to take care of one's own is a very old idea.

Neither progressive nor any specific tax idea is a monopoly of the extreme left - the extreme liberal.

I don't see any logical way that a liberal let alone an extreme liberal could oppose a progressive tax. It makes available more funds to support government programs than would otherwise be feasible and it takes that money from the rich.
