As I figured, your comment was not humor, it was sarcasm. Which is fine.

I do find your comment as strange though. I do not find heroic love and compassion "maudlin". I also did not find "The Dog of Flanders" maudlin, but instead instructive to civilization about the importance of compassion.

The history of the human species, has been more defined by the dark ages, than the age of enlightenment.

The book was about good versus evil, carrying the light, the good guys and bad guys. Compassion and love.

The author had to create a horrific background to make the story work. Is the cannibalism any worse than a zillion things that happened in Nazi Germany?

As the book did win the pulitzer prize, a few people must agree with me. Oh well, different strokes for different folks.
