What lead to this crisis was the loosening of regulation to ridiculously low levels. That created the environment where anything was possible. Then of course the thieves took advantage of it.

If you want to go live back in the jungle or in a society where all the rules have been thrown out the window like Somalia, be my guest. But if you want to live in civil society, then we need rules and someone needs to enforce them. That someone is the government.
