Remember reading an article - some time in the early 80's - about a young doctor - who went to good schools, was well trained, idealistic, hard working, seeing some 50 patients a day - and who was in the process of filing for personal bankruptcy. Why? - because he wanted to do the right thing and accepted Medicaid patients. Nowadays many insurers, including Medicare, pay relatively little for "cognitive" services - not enough to run a practice and to make a living. And that's the problem that Endocrinologists are facing - serious work involving lotsa thinking, and no well paid procedures.
