More electronics production moving to China...............
Samsung to Relocate Half of Elec. Group
October 23, 1997 (SEOUL) -- The Samsung Group is devising a plan to relocate half of its domestic production base to overseas sites.
Specifically, Samsung plans to build more electronics production facilities abroad, according to a company official.
The official said Samsung plans to increase the scale of overseas production in such areas as information technology, communications, multimedia and semiconductors, to over 50 percent by 2000, from the current 20 to 30 percent.
Samsung's relocation plan will result in major changes because those divisions account for 70 percent of Samsung's electronics revenues.
The group intends to make more home electronics, including TVs, VCRs and logic microchips, outside of Korea.
To speed up the shift overseas, Samsung is considering setting up large production centers in six countries: China, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil and India.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Ltd. and Samsung Corning Co., Ltd. would enter the planned production complexes at the same time, the official added.
